LA Light by Colin Rich

Beautiful time lapse photography of “the electric radiance of Los Angeles at night.”

Gorgeous pop-up book with film projection video.  Read more about the process here.

I seem to have a thing for kids reenacting holiday events (see my favorite Thanksgiving video).  This one was sweet and touching, with the bonus of accents!

My friend Brett Talks Beer with Gary Vaynerchuk on WineLibraryTV!

This spring I convinced Brett to join me for an afternoon show and we started the day early at two of his favorite East Side places, Caracas for arepas and empanadas before heading to Hop Devil Grill, where I realized that when the guys at work talk about Brett’s beer knowledge, they weren’t kidding.  It was also around that time that Brett introduced me to Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library TV, who’s bringing wine to the masses, not keeping it in it’s elevated, pretentious state.

I was quite excited when Brett told me last month that he was guesting on the show to discuss beer.  He filmed it yesterday and a group of us were hitting refresh on the website throughout the day at work, in hopes of Brett’s episode being posted.  It was put up tonight and I raced upstairs (after asking Jeremy if he wanted to watch ;) ) to watch like a proud older sister, although I think we’re maybe 4 days apart and he’s older.  Check Brett out below..

Brett has his own site, 10 Cent Freeze Pops, on which he occasionally teases me with new posts, but hasn’t found the time to get back to writing his sports, music and pop culture tidbits.

You may also remember him from some past adventures:
(I STILL love their song, Person Place or Thing.)

Radiohead “House of Cards” Video with Lasers!

This has been one of my favorite songs from In Rainbows and I love that once again, the band had to be innovative and refused to use cameras or lights to shoot the video. Love the shots of the cul de sac; kinda creeped out by Thom Yorke’s laser scanned face.

Check out the making-of video and description.

MGMT Weekend

I haven’t been able to get MGMT out of my head all weekend. I haven’t had it this bad for the band since March, but Friday was definitely an Electric Feel evening.  Oracular Spectacular is an On playlist all it’s own.

I’m hoping that there will be some videos online from Bonnaroo, but until then, we have the crazy energy of their “Kids” performance at SXSW, which is an absolute favorite of mine, plus there’s always their new video for “Electric Feel” in hi-def.

The guys are heading to Europe for the next month and of course are playing the McCarren Pool Parties the same day as the Boss concert.  I’ll keep my fingers crossed for some more shows around Brooklyn that weekend.

Happy Father’s Day!

Daddy Lauer & I last fall

Without a doubt, my Dad deserves all the credit for getting this girl off to a solid musical start.  When I first started this blog, there was something in the About Me section about being raised on a healthy diet of classic rock, early country and the blues.  Daddy Lauer is the one who’s solely responsible for that—my mom can only name 7 songs that she likes.  Here’s a musical Father’s Day Tribute to my Dad for raising me well—in music and everything else.

A huge Allman Brothers fan, I was named after the sixth track on Brothers and Sisters.  Their records were frequently playing in our house, although it was my younger brother who could only fall asleep to Greg Allman’s “I’m No Angel.”   Dad and I were able to see the band live at Blossom July 23, 2000 and once Greg’s hepatitis clears up, hopefully we’ll catch them at their annual New York stand.

I had it BAD for Davey Jones and The Monkees as a child.  For my fifth birthday, I told my parents that the only thing I wanted was Davey Jones.  While they couldn’t bring the young, attractive Davey Jones from the show to our house, since he had to be in his 40s or so by then, they did get me concert tickets to see him…and a rising opening act, named Weird Al Yankovic.  Yay for young, hip parents.

Daddy Lauer introduced me to The Beach Boys when he bought me my first cassette, a greatest hits beach music release, before we left for vacation that year.  That cassette led to many choreographed dance routines and music video creations in our basement over the years.  (And yes, my little Ellen friend still does the California Girls dance at ND football games with me.)

Lynyrd Skynyrd enabled Daddy Lauer to give me a lesson about drugs as I wondered what on earth “That Smell” was about.  And Dad still laughs whenever Hank Williams came on, because little 5 year old Jessi loved to sing those lyrics about the rough and rowdy country life, complete with lots of drinking and screwing.

There have been plenty of other songs and artists that my Dad has introduced me to, but I’m closing with Bruce Hornsby’s Mandolin Rain.  When I moved to Connecticut, Dad made me a mixtape (okay, cd) and that was one that really surprised me and quickly grew into a favorite of mine.

Dad thanks for being such a great influence over the years and now that this is your official introduction to the blog, I hope you like what you find here as much as I’ve liked the music you’ve exposed me to over the years.

Oh yeah, Daddy Lauer likes Al Green and Chicago, too.  Here’s a clip from a tv special in the 70s, complete with cheesy intro.

The National - All the Wine - Then & Now

Rumor has it that if you keep refreshing, there are tasteful nudes at their site. I haven’t found them yet.

I’ve had a bit of a The National weekend.
-I finally got around to watching A Skin, A Night.
-I’m still on a Frightened Rabbit kick and Grant’s drumming is very evocative of Bryan’s.
-Yesterday, I realized they have the same producer, Peter Katis.
-Today I’m realizing that I might be so in love with The National that I’ll go for anything similar…although I really think that the drumming is the only major similarity. Their overall sound is quite different.

Anyway, I found this video of an old version of All the Wine from a VERY EARLY performance at the Mercury Lounge. As much as they try to avoid the alt-country label, it certainly sounds that way to me. I’ll stick with the current version, which you can find below from the Black Sessions in ‘05.
